Peter Mayer Gives Glimpse of $7.5 million Multimedia Katrina Exhibit

Against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina’s fifth anniversary, Peter Mayer PR coordinated a special media preview on Saturday, August 28, for the upcoming exhibit, Living with Hurricanes: Katrina and Beyond, opening at the Louisiana State Museum on October 26. Best-selling author and historian Douglas Brinkley was the event’s keynote speaker, and he was joined by the Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas; James Beard Award-Winning Chef Scott Boswell; Beacon of Hope Resource Center Founder Denise Thornton; first responder Ken Bellau (a resident who saved more than 400 people); and Louisiana State Museum Director Sam Rykels. Formal remarks were followed by a walk-through of the 6,700-square-foot exhibit space where curators presented and discussed numerous artifacts that will be on display.

Five years in the making, the new $7.5 million installation will be the largest hurricane exhibit in the world. This one-of-a-kind installation, much of it built from Katrina-ruined salvage, includes a re-creation of a flooded attic from which a family escaped and the axe they used to chop their way out; interactive displays on the science of levee failure, coastal erosion, and sea level rise; and as a centerpiece, music legend Fats Domino’s Steinway piano, salvaged from his flooded Lower 9th Ward home and displayed as it was found.

Peter Mayer helped secure local, national and international media coverage for the event, which coincided with the Katrina anniversary. ABC News and ABC News reporter Bob Woodruff attended the event, as did FOX News Channel, and CNN ran a series of five stories over the anniversary weekend that generated 2 million impressions and $200,000 in PR value. Local NBC affiliate WDSU-TV also produced a significant package from the event. For photos of the media preview, click here.

Peter Mayer and Whitney Bank Show Some Black and Gold Spirit

Whitney Bank, a Peter Mayer client for more than 35 years and now the official bank of the New Orleans Saints, recently launched a new campaign targeting die-hard Saints fans across the Gulf Coast. Whitney is now offering Saints VISA® debit cards and official Saints checks with any Whitney personal checking account. The campaign exudes the passion we have for our championship team and asks the question, “Are you a card-carrying Saints fan?”

Peter Mayer worked with Whitney Bank to develop a multichannel campaign, which includes television, radio, print, interactive, outdoor, direct mail, branch posters and collateral, employee incentives, ATM screens, and Superdome signage. The campaign will run during the Saints’ regular season (and, we hope, well into the postseason!) in Whitney markets in South Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

Peter Mayer Media Team Analyzes Fall TV Schedule

Peter Mayer’s Media department recently researched, reviewed and analyzed the upcoming fall broadcast TV schedule. Three distinct trends are evident: a renewed emphasis on aggressively programming Friday nights with both promising new series and established hits; the return of high-profile, “buzzy” network dramas, many of which are targeting hard-to-reach male viewers; and reboots and updates of several TV favorites, including Hawaii Five-O, La Femme Nikita and The Defenders.

A total of 24 new series will premiere this fall, while 13 existing shows will return on new days or in new time slots. Some of the new entrants that have caught the attention of our Media team are The Event, Outsourced, Running Wilde and the previously mentioned Hawaii Five-O.

These results, as well as strategies, statistics and the inside scoop will be shared with existing and prospective clients in a detailed presentation that includes clips of new shows. Official premiere week begins September 20.
