Zatarain’s rings bell to open New York Stock Exchange

On March 3, Peter Mayer worked with Zatarain’s, its parent McCormick and Company Inc., and New York Stock Exchange officials to ring the market’s opening bell live from the French Quarter to celebrate this year’s Carnival season. The bell ringing took place at Washington Artillery Park with iconic Jackson Square providing the backdrop.

Executives from Zatarain’s and McCormick were joined by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Greater New Orleans Inc. President and CEO Michael Hecht to open trading on the Exchange while noted jazz musician James Andrews serenaded the participants and an impromptu crowd with the New Orleans classic, “When the Saints Go Marching In.” While we can’t prove it, the injection of New Orleans fun and flavor may have been just what the doctor ordered, as blue chip stocks on the Dow Jones Industrial Average surged by nearly 200 points for the day.

The event was broadcast around the world by the NYSE and was carried live nationally on CNBC and Bloomberg News. The event also was picked up by CNN and broadcast on all four local New Orleans TV stations – WWL-TV, WVUE-TV, WDSU-TV, and WGNO-TV.

The Times-Picayune’s Business section covered the event in print and online, and Getty Images sent a photographer on behalf of their national image wire. As a result, the story was carried in the March 4 print edition of The Wall Street Journal.

The Peter Mayer PR team complemented its traditional media relations with a robust campaign of outreach on Twitter to key local social media influencers and media, generating more than 182,000 impressions on the popular microblog, making it the top trending topic in New Orleans during the time of the event.
